The Creative Knowledge Foundation, in collaboration with with Archi.Media Trust and KOOR srl BC, has partnered with the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia and the Culinary Art Commissions to launch a special edition of the Bread Between Us – بيناتنا خبز project.
This initiative aims to connect with the Arab world, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) vibrant culture and heritage on a global stage. A central focus of this project is fostering dialogue between indigenous communities and sustainable development, emphasizing the vital link between traditional breadmaking and sustainability .
Through this initiative, we seek to empower local communities, encouraging pride in their cultural heritage, especially in light of the transformative changes brought about by Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The project celebrates the significance of local breads and honors the contributions of artisanal bakers, farmers, and millers. We equip communities with tools to promote their unique narratives surrounding the art of breadmaking, thereby preserving the rich bread traditions of Saudi Arabia..

Focusing on Seven Key Cities

This special edition highlights seven cities across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, each with its own unique breadmaking traditions:
- Al-Ahsa (Eastern Region): Known for its ancient agricultural practices, Al-Ahsa is a cradle of wheat and date cultivation, tracing its roots back over 5,000 years. It is connected to the Fertile Crescent, where the domestication of wheat occurred between 9,000 and 7,000 BC.
- Buraydah (Central Region): Often referred to as the breadbasket of Saudi Arabia, Buraydah plays a pivotal role in the Kingdom’s agricultural heritage. Here, wheat is not just a crop but a symbol of sustenance, tradition, and community resilience.
- Riyadh (Central Region): The capital represents a blend of traditional and contemporary breadmaking practices. It showcases multicultural influences that enrich its culinary landscape with unique techniques, flavors, and shapes.
- Jeddah (Western Region – Hijaz): As the historic entry point for pilgrims during the Hajj, Jeddah’s breads reflect the creative exchanges between various cultures that have visited the city throughout history.
- Jazan (Western Region – Hijaz): Serving as a bridge between the Arab Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, Jazan highlights the rich interactions between local and African cultures, which are beautifully illustrated in its local breads.
- Medina (Western Region – Hijaz): In Medina, bread plays a crucial role in fulfilling traditional Arab hospitality, supporting the millions of pilgrims visiting the sacred city each year.
- Taif (Western Region – Hijaz): An area with historical significance in wheat production, Taif continues to be integral to the preparation of traditional breads enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
